Barbie the Movie 2023 Barbie in Plaid Matching Set Doll HRF26 Review and Buyer’s Guide

DOLL/PLAYSET PARTICULARS AND THOUGHTS:

After my first impressions article, I have had some time to really think about this new Barbie the Movie 2023 Barbie in Plaid Matching Set Doll (HRF26). I must admit that I really like the fact that we get to see more of her face and that we do have a slightly different version of the pink gingham dress doll without the bangs. So yes, in this regard, I think they did a great job in creating a doll that has a close resemblance to the actress. As I get used to the dolls in this collection, I am beginning to realize that they were aiming for close resemblances and not an exact one of the actors. I hope in the future that they will be able to justify a budget that will have dolls that look exactly like the actors. I think that there is now a lot of fanfare in the doll community that proves that I am not the only one who would immediately buy those versions of these characters. In regards to this doll's gorgeous face, there is no sign of pixelation in her face painting and her makeup has been drawn so naturally. Think of the "no-make-up make-up look." However, it is the typical celebrity doll caricature style of face sculpting and not shaped like the regular Barbie doll face mold. I don't prefer the caricature style because it looks more cartoon than doll-like, but I do find this doll's face to be very pretty and enchanting. There is more emphasis on her drawn on long eyelashes than eye makeup and her lips are painted a pretty, glossy, and neutral light pink. Despite my leanings in regards to face mold style, I am finding myself liking this doll more and more as time goes on. Looking at her from different angles, there is a lot to appreciate for sure.

As with my review of the Gloria Barbie Doll in terms of discussing articulation, I must wonder why this doll does not have made to move capabilities. She is listed as having the Gigi body type with high heeled feet and I know a lot of us would prefer her to be on a made to move body. However, again, I am rather curious if this has anything to do with the storyline for the movie since humans clearly have more articulation and range of movement than dolls. If you are new to doll customization, a lot of doll collectors are already resorting to head swapping and buying a made to move doll with the same skin tone and rebodying so that this doll and other dolls in this collection can have the maximum articulation available that will yield the most possible poses for display or photography purposes. Even though I know it sounds like it is delicate work, and you could break the doll, it is not that hard to do once you get the hang of it and it is a very basic way of customizing as you begin to build the experience.

This doll, as gorgeous as she is, only has 12 points of articulation as opposed to the 22 points she could have had with the made to move body. This is a bit disheartening even if the body type is more aesthetically pleasing. Visually when the made to move dolls first came out, it took me awhile to appreciate the total beauty of such dolls with that look. On a made to move doll, I don't believe that the knees look as fully functional as they could look. Overall, the joints look very weak and flimsy whether they are dressed in tights, knee highs, or bare. And, the ankles joints have always been a bit weak as well. We lost the dolls being able to stand up on their own once their ankles got articulated. Since it has been 8 years now that we made to move dolls, I hope that Mattel revisits the design and finds a way to take care of this so that it can look more appealing, realistic and be more practical for photo shoots. Anyway, getting back to this doll and her particular capabilities, expect her to be able to do over 100 poses. However, she will not be able to touch her chin or side of her head very well. As an example, if you would like to photograph her with her cellphone close to her ear, you will see what I mean by the limitations of an articulated fashionista body. Now think of all of the other kinds of similar poses and you will realize how limited this body type is even with the benefit of over 100 poses.

The outfit is just so cheerful and pretty! Every piece of clothing she wears, from her hat to her jacket to her blouse and her skirt, is decked out in this ever so pleasing pastel plaid design. The only detail that she is wearing that is not in this pattern is her solid light baby blue high heel sandal shoes! It should be noted that her blouse and skirt have a satin finish while her jacket, and hat appear to be made out of a cotton material with a stamped waffle beveling. This is the second doll that I have come across to be wearing a piece or two of clothing in satin in this collection. The first is Gloria with her satin blazer. I am curious since two of the dolls in collection now have at least 1 piece of clothing in satin, will there be others too?

Also, we got a clue from this doll's official description! She wears this outfit on her journey back to Barbieland! We can now set up a timeline as to how the movie begins and ends! Neat, huh?

MY DOLL/PLAYSET FROM AMAZON:

My Barbie the Movie 2023 Barbie in Plaid Matching Set Doll (HRF26) was purchased at the same time as my Barbie the Movie 2023 Gloria Barbie doll (HPJ98) on June 2nd, 2023. Two-day shipping was selected, however, it was processed and arrived to me on June 7th. The dolls came mailed separately in their original Mattel boxes. I suspect that Amazon got over flooded with orders and wanted them out of inventory as soon as possible. The box has the same info on it as the Gloria doll just tailored to the details of this Barbie doll. I think in current lighting she does radiate in a very goddess like way, and she appears to be very statuesque. I feel that she is another solid purchase and I look forward to seeing the movie and purchasing more of these dolls in the near future!

In person, it was a relief to confirm that this is a three-piece outfit. None of the clothes are sewn together to create the illusion of three pieces. As previously mentioned but with more detail, she is a wearing sleeveless satin finish blouse with a tie string at the color along with a matching skirt. A long sleeve bolero jacket in a waffle pattern and a wide brimmed hat also in waffle print with a ribbon around the center and trailing off the brim to the back. Under the skirt, she is wearing a crinoline petticoat and white panties. Her fingernails are painted pink but not her toenails. She barely has any eyeshadow on! Just really long painted on eyelashes. Black eyeliner on top of the eye and deep brown on her lower eye. That is it! She has natural light pink blush on and dainty drop-down dangle pearl earrings.
