Barbie The Movie 2023 Gloria Doll HPJ98: Review and Buyer’s Guide

DOLL/PLAYSET PARTICULARS AND THOUGHTS:

The Barbie the Movie 2023 Gloria Doll (HPJ98) is based upon a character that the actress America Ferrera plays in the titular movie. As mentioned in my previous first impressions article, it is a passable resemblance and not a close or a perfect one! It is a nice likeliness that any doll customizer with advanced skills could rectify anyway, he or she would like. If the idea of an Ugly Betty doll is intriguing to you, I believe this doll is a great start to such a project. After researching where I recognized this particular face sculpt from, I think that it does bare a strong resemblance to the Fifth Harmony doll made for Camila Cabello (CHG42) back in 2014/2015. The only difference is the hair color and how they painted the eyes. Check it out for yourself and let me know your thoughts! Her makeup is soft shades of pink and deep pink/burgundy that are neutral and natural. It should be no problem to change her look without feeling as if you would need to match her makeup to her outfit and should photograph well.

Due to her stature, Mattel made America’s doll petite and with made to move capabilities. It is an interesting choice and makes me curious why her doll was selected for a made to movies body and not all the dolls in this collection. For example, Margot Robbie’s Barbie has limited articulation and she is the star of the movie. America’s character is also supposed to be a Mattel Executive employee. Technically if an employee has an office job wouldn’t he or she be sitting the majority of the time? I know when I had a desk job, I did plenty of sitting during those days. So, wouldn’t her character have less articulation as long as she could sit in a chair believably? For now, my questions will have to go unanswered. I do know that articulation is a part of the storyline and a cute nod to doll collectors. Once the movie is released for worldwide viewing on July 21st, 2023, I am certain that the intent will become clearer from the movie storyline. In the meantime, I am quite pleased to know that my doll does have the maximum versatility of movement and poses available to her when I place her on display and/or pose for pictures.

Her hot pink professional attire is amazing! It is on par with the quality of outfits seen at the Barbie Signature level. Mixing and matching the outfits will certainly be fun as you can dress the satin blazer up or down depending upon the theme of your photo shoot. Putting the blazer on a doll for an after-hours event or casual date would be quite splendid. Also, I really like her pinstriped, wide-legged slacks. I think it would look great paired with a white blouse and a pair of preppy white sneakers for running errands around town. Other than gold hoop earrings, she does not come wearing any other jewelry. I think that this is to keep with that conservative look. I would like to have seen how they would have designed a bracelet and a necklace for this doll. More simple but tasteful jewelry options are definitely needed in the doll world for doll collectors to accessorize our dolls without the items looking overly play line. Those high heeled power shoes look like they were made for dancing, and it would be great to showcase them with a medium length dress for fun! And I just adore the rainbow color block detail that makes up the straps. I would not be surprised if these shoes became really popular and a must have accessory among doll collectors!

MY DOLL/PLAYSET FROM AMAZON:

I ordered my Barbie the Movie doll from Amazon on June 2nd and received it four days later on June 7th. So, it took Amazon two days to process the order before they could have it shipped to me by 2nd day. Due to the demand for these dolls, I believe that they shipped it relatively quickly to me. It came in the original cardboard shipment box from Mattel and not in an Amazon box. It would appear that I just might have a first wave doll that Amazon was not trying to waste any time or money repackaging to get it out to the customer. The original box is interesting because it indicates that the doll was made at the Mattel Indonesia plant and that it should not be opened until after June 1, 2023. Outside of this box, the doll is just beautiful, and she seems warm approachable but in charge. The more that I see her and pose her, the more that I like her, and I believe that she is becoming one of my favorites. I am looking forward to the movie and seeing this character in action!

In person, it is noteworthy to mention that her eyeshadow has shimmery gold too and it is very pretty when held to the light. Her eyebrows are thick and gorgeous! They spent time detailing individual strands of hair on her brow. The only thing strange is her ear. I cannot tell if she has a flesh tone hearing aid in her ear or if they decided not to give any attention to detail to its shape and contour. Also, her clothes have velcro, not snaps to secure her garments from opening. I am disappointed with this detail since this is a signature doll that is twice the of a non-signature one. I do like that it is three pieces of clothes that are not attached to each other. However, once you take the doll's clothes off, the sweater loses its shape because loose thread had been used to maintain an exact fit. Once undressed and refitted, the sweater blouse becomes a bit too big at the waist. A lot of people seem to like being provided with this detail: her fingernails are painted a light pink color. Her toes are not.

Also, this next detail is very new to me as a returning doll collector and toy reviewer. When since did Mattel began using double-sided tape to help secure the doll clothes to the doll's body? This is with just about all of the dolls in this series. I don't know how I feel about this since it nearly ruined a few of the doll's clothes.
